Porter Arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport Over Alleged Theft of Passenger's Cash

A porter (31) was detained by police at Ngurah Rai International Airport's domestic departure terminal in Bali, suspected of stealing approximately 18 million rupiah in cash from a passenger's luggage. CCTV footage review and a search of his residence led to the recovery of 15.8 million rupiah in cash along with other evidence.

Police at Ngurah Rai International Airport announced on Tuesday, October 6, that they had detained a porter (initials NE, 31, from Tabanan) on suspicion of stealing cash from a passenger's luggage in the make-up area of the airport's domestic departure terminal.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, October 2, around 7:30 PM local time, while the victim (initials BTW, 25, from Nganjuk, East Java) was handling baggage near the conveyor belt. CCTV footage showed a porter opening the victim's unlocked bag, searching through it, and then returning it to the conveyor.

During initial questioning, the suspect admitted to taking cash from the victim's bag. A search of his residence in Kuta led to the recovery of 15.8 million rupiah in cash, along with an orange-and-black uniform and an airport access pass, which were seized as evidence. According to the victim's report, the total amount stolen was approximately 18 million rupiah.

Investigators are continuing to question witnesses as the case proceeds under Article 476 of Indonesia's Criminal Code concerning theft. Airport police have urged travelers to keep a closer watch on their belongings, especially valuables, while within the airport premises.

Things to Consider

Always lock your bags and keep them within sight while at the airport. When handing luggage to porters near the conveyor area, keep valuables such as cash and jewelry on your person in a carry-on bag rather than in checked luggage. If you suspect theft, report it immediately to the airport police (Polres Kawasan Bandara) and request a review of CCTV footage.
