Ngurah Rai Airport Marks Indonesia's Independence Day with Cultural Events and Beach Cleanup

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar held a series of cultural events from August 16 to 21, 2026, to commemorate Indonesia's 81st Independence Day.

On August 16, traditional Balinese music performances featuring Rindik, Selonding, and Gender instruments accompanied travelers at both domestic and international terminals. In the evening, airport staff performed a Baleganjur dance drama depicting the struggle of I Gusti Ngurah Rai at the domestic arrival area.

On August 17 (Independence Day itself) at 10:17 AM local time, Indonesia's national anthem 'Indonesia Raya' was played simultaneously at both terminals, with some travelers pausing their activities to listen. This was followed by a 'nusantara parade,' where airport staff dressed in traditional costumes from across Indonesia greeted passengers.

On August 18, independence-themed games and a choir performance of national songs accompanied by piano and violin were held.

The series of events concluded on August 21 with a beach cleanup at Kelan Beach, joined by around 400 participants including airport staff, Badung regional government officials, and local Kelan community members. The airport also donated 100 composting units to nearby residents.

Airport General Manager Nugroho Jati, representing operator InJourney Airports (formerly Angkasa Pura), stated the activities aimed to let travelers directly feel the spirit of independence while also reflecting the company's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

For tourists and foreign residents, these events amount to brief cultural displays encountered while passing through the airport and do not affect flight schedules or normal airport operations.
