N High School Group Conducts Field Study on Waste and Poverty Issues in Bali
Students from N, S, and R High Schools conducted a six-day field study in Bali in July 2026, visiting a landfill, an ocean waste NGO, a free maternity clinic, and a regenerative farm to learn about social issues behind the tourist destination.
From July 5 to 10, 2026, N High School, S High School, and R High School (the N Koukou Group) conducted the 'Indonesia Field Work 2026' program in Bali. With cooperation from the nonprofit Earth Company, the program took students to sites not typically visited by tourists.
Students stayed at the eco-conscious accommodation 'Mana Earthly Paradise' and visited the TPA Suwung landfill, one of Bali's largest, learning about the lives and livelihoods of communities near the waste site. They also visited Sungai Watch, an organization addressing river and ocean plastic pollution, Bumi Sehat, a free maternity clinic serving low-income mothers, and Astungkara Way, a regenerative farming initiative.
The program highlighted social issues in Bali from a perspective distinct from typical tourism, helping students understand how local environmental and healthcare challenges are connected to consumption patterns in countries like Japan. For general tourists and residents, this serves as a reminder of the realities behind Bali's popular image as a tourist destination.
Things to Consider
When visiting Bali, consider looking beyond the resort image to understand local challenges like waste management and healthcare access. Travelers can participate in beach cleanups or workshops run by environmental NGOs, or choose accommodations and farms that practice sustainable operations to support responsible tourism.
