Lombok Island Emerges as the "Next Bali" — A Traffic-Free Natural Retreat Gaining Popularity
Lombok Island, located just east of Bali, is gaining attention as an alternative destination amid Bali's overtourism issues like traffic congestion and rising costs. It offers clear-water snorkeling, the Gili Islands, and diverse areas like Senggigi and Kuta, though local transportation has some unique restrictions travelers should know about.
Bali, Indonesia's world-renowned resort destination, has increasingly faced overtourism challenges in recent years, including worsening traffic congestion, waste problems, and rising prices and living costs driven by growing visitor numbers. Amid these issues, Lombok Island, located just east of Bali, is emerging as a next-generation resort destination attracting global attention.
Unlike Bali, Lombok does not suffer from severe traffic congestion, and while development is progressing, much of its untouched nature remains. The island is popular for snorkeling thanks to its clear waters and high chances of encountering sea turtles even in shallow areas, making it accessible for beginners. The Gili Islands (Gili Meno, Gili Air, and Gili Trawangan), reachable by speedboat from Lombok's ports, are also popular, each offering a distinct atmosphere.
The island features several notable areas: Senggigi in the west, known for sunset-view accommodations, and Kuta in the south, about 30 minutes by car from the airport, offering walkable streets and surfing opportunities. Trekking on the active volcano Mount Rinjani and experiencing traditional "ikat" weaving in Sasak villages, home to Lombok's indigenous Sasak people, are also popular activities.
Travelers from Japan can reach Lombok International Airport via connecting flights through Jakarta or Bali, or by speedboat from Bali (approximately 2-3 hours). Boat services can be canceled due to high waves or strong winds, making them weather-dependent.
For getting around the island, ride-hailing apps like Blue Bird Taxi and Grab are the primary means of transportation, but in some areas, local operators restrict taxi access, making it difficult to call a ride. In the Kuta area in particular, outside taxis can enter but may be unable to pick up passengers within the area, so travelers are advised to check in advance whether their accommodation offers shuttle services. Travel to the Gili Islands is mainly by speedboat, with most departures in the morning, so arriving at the port on time is important.

Since most boats to the Gili Islands depart in the morning, arrange tickets or tour bookings the day before and arrive at the port with plenty of time to spare.
