Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone Opens Sira Village Mall With Focus on Sustainability

A new shopping mall, Sira Village Grand Outlet Bali, has opened within the Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on Serangan Island in Denpasar. Rizal Edwin Manansang, acting Secretary General of Indonesia's National SEZ Council, urged developers to uphold sustainability principles going forward, including preserving Balinese culture and expanding economic benefits for local communities.

According to Edwin, Indonesia aims for the tourism sector to contribute 5% of GDP by 2029, with projected foreign exchange earnings of $39.4 billion. Special economic zones like Kura Kura Bali are intended to play a key role in creating a more competitive investment ecosystem, positioning the area as an integrated hub for quality tourism, creative economy, lifestyle, education, and sustainable business development.

Tantowi Yahya, President Commissioner of Kura Kura Bali SEZ and President Director of Sira Village, said the mall incorporates traditional Balinese spatial concepts—Bale (communal pavilion) and Natah (central courtyard)—into contemporary architecture. The design emphasizes recycled materials, energy efficiency, natural ventilation, and responsible waste management. Balinese script is mandatory on all shop signage, and air conditioning is limited to individual stores rather than public areas to conserve energy.

Spanning 4.8 hectares with capacity for 130 stores, the mall aims to employ around 1,000 workers, predominantly local Balinese. Alongside global brands, the development sets aside space for local small and micro enterprises (UMKM), offering outlet-priced goods with views of Benoa Harbor.
