Despite Budget Cuts, Semarak Jembrana Festival 2026 Still Draws Crowds
The Semarak Jembrana Festival 2026 is underway in Jembrana Regency, West Bali. Despite regional budget constraints, the 10-day festival features a cultural parade and traditional performances, kept alive through community volunteer spirit (gotong royong).
Jembrana Regency in West Bali is currently hosting the Semarak Jembrana Festival 2026, marking the anniversary of Negara City, Bali Province's founding day, and Indonesia's 81st Independence Day. Despite tight regional finances leading to budget cuts, the festival remains lively thanks to residents' spirit of voluntary service (ngayah) and mutual cooperation (gotong royong).
The highlight was the Nusantara Cultural Parade held on Sunday, August 23, along Jalan Ngurah Rai in Negara City, themed around unity in diversity. Thousands of local artists participated, transforming the city streets into a stage reflecting Indonesia's ethnic and cultural diversity.
The 10-day festival features activities across three main zones around the Jembrana Regency office. The parking area hosts local economic activities including craft exhibitions, SME booths, and a job fair. Pura Jagatnatha temple showcases traditional Balinese arts such as Gong Kebyar, Baleganjur, and Drama Gong performances. Meanwhile, the Dr. Ir. Soekarno Arts Building features contemporary shows, music concerts, and iconic performances including Jegog, Joged Bumbung, and Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry.
Jembrana Regent I Made Kembang Hartawan said community enthusiasm was a key reason the local government maintained the festival despite budget efficiency measures, noting that organizing committees and artists volunteered their services alongside support from private businesses and state enterprises.
