Denpasar Aims to Develop Sustainable Sports Tourism as Bali Tourist Arrivals Rise
Denpasar's city government plans to sustainably develop sports-based tourism events, with Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa recently receiving a special award at the Bali Tourism Award 2026. The Bali Friendship Hockey Festival, held in September with teams from Indonesia, Singapore and Australia, exemplifies this trend, as Bali's tourist arrivals reached about 4.6 million by August 2026.
The Denpasar City Government plans to continue promoting sporting events designed to function both as competitive activities and tourist attractions. Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa received the Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Leadership in Advancing Sport Tourism in Bali 2026 at the 11th Bali Tourism Award on September 14th, stating that such development must be carried out sustainably while respecting local culture, the environment, and residents' comfort.
I Wayan Sumarajaya, Head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, attending on behalf of the Governor, reported that tourist arrivals to Bali reached approximately 4.6 million as of August 2026, an increase compared to the same period in 2025. He emphasized that tourism is not merely an economic activity but an integral part of the community's way of life passed down through generations.
Bali continues to build its reputation as a sports tourism destination. On September 12th and 13th, the Bali Friendship Hockey Festival (BFHF) 2026 was held, serving both as a competition and a platform to develop hockey and boost sports tourism potential in Bali. According to Organising Committee Chairman Dave Helmy Willem, six countries participated including Indonesia, Singapore, and Australia, with plans discussed for a US team to join next year's event.
