British Tourist Dies After Alleged Assault by Group of Australians at Kuta Bar
A British tourist, Paul Innes Dougan, died after allegedly being beaten by a group of four Australian men at a bar in Kuta, Bali, in the early hours of August 5. The suspects left Indonesia the day after the incident, and Denpasar police are now coordinating with the Australian consulate as the investigation continues.
According to Denpasar city police, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. local time on August 5, 2026, at a bar on Jalan Raya Legian in Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali. British tourist Paul Innes Dougan was allegedly assaulted by a group of four men believed to be Australian nationals — two younger and two older. Police said the altercation began when one of the men struck a woman inside the bar; Dougan intervened, and the group then turned on him.
Dougan was hospitalized on August 8 with rib fractures and internal bleeding, underwent three major surgeries and four blood transfusions, but was pronounced dead at BIMC Hospital around 12:06 p.m. on August 20. His body is currently held at Dharma Yadnya General Hospital.
The family reported the incident to police nearly two weeks after it occurred, on August 20. The victim's son, Liam Michael Dougan (23), had earlier posted updates on Instagram describing the attack as being carried out by a group of Australians while his father was on holiday in Bali.
Based on crime scene analysis, witness statements and CCTV footage, police identified four suspects with the initials RGG, PAM, JRM and TRZ. All four left Indonesia the day after the incident, on August 6, and have not yet been apprehended. Denpasar police are coordinating with the Australian embassy/consulate as the investigation continues.
