Bali's Traditional 'Subeng' Earrings Evolve: Cultural Event 'Kawan Nusantara 2026' Showcases Heritage Transformation
The 'Kawan Nusantara 2026' cultural event was held at The Meru Sanur in Denpasar, featuring Bali's traditional 'subeng' earrings as a symbol of cultural evolution. The event showcased 48 artwear pieces, traditional dance performances, and batik textiles celebrating Indonesia's National Batik Day.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the 'Kawan Nusantara 2026' cultural event, themed 'Evolusi' (Evolution), was held at The Meru Sanur in Denpasar. The event used Bali's traditional 'subeng' earrings as a medium to illustrate how cultural heritage transforms and finds new forms over time.
According to Tulola founder Happy Salma, the main installation depicted the journey of subeng through four stages: Offering, Expression, Value, and Transformation. Each stage incorporated distinct motifs, including patterns inspired by Balinese temple architecture, lotus flowers, and basket designs.
The opening performance, 'Rangga Rasmi,' was presented by Sanggar Widya Sani of Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), with performers wearing 12 selected batik fabrics provided by Sarinah in celebration of National Batik Day.
The event featured the 'Evolusi' Artwear collection comprising 48 piecesāincluding earrings, brooches, necklaces, and braceletsāalongside a collaborative work titled 'Heroes of Heritage' by BCA, Tulola, and craftsmen from Taro Tourism Village, Bali. Traditional keris (ceremonial daggers) crafted by local artists were also showcased.
The event highlights the blending of traditional heritage preservation with contemporary design, part of a broader effort to expand market access for local creative industries. For foreign tourists and residents, it offers an opportunity to engage with Bali's evolving cultural and artisanal traditions.
Things to Consider
Tourists and residents interested in Balinese culture and traditional crafts should check local tourism information centers or social media for similar cultural events at venues like The Meru Sanur. When purchasing traditional Balinese handicrafts, buying through official events or exhibitions involving local artisans and galleries helps ensure authenticity and deepens understanding of the cultural context.
