Bali's Canggu Draws Crowds for Pre-Dawn 'Silent Disco Run' — But Safety Concerns Emerge

A pre-dawn 'silent disco run' event has become popular among tourists and long-term residents in Bali's Canggu area, where participants wear wireless headphones and jog through a scenic shortcut path at 5:30am. While the free, no-reservation event is organized by a local community group, concerns have been raised online about safety and consideration for local residents.

A new pre-dawn activity called the 'silent disco run' has been gaining attention on social media in Bali's Canggu area. Organized by local community group Entourage Bali, the event gathers hundreds of participants at 5:30am along a scenic pathway known as the 'Canggu Shortcut,' which runs between rice terraces. A pickup truck carrying a DJ leads the pack while participants wear glowing wireless headphones and run to the music. The event is free and requires no advance reservation—anyone can simply show up.

Organizers say noise impact is minimal since music is streamed directly to headphones rather than played over speakers, and the location was chosen partly because few residents live nearby. At the May 2026 event, the number of available headphones (150) effectively capped participation.

However, safety concerns have surfaced online. Critics point out that running on public roads while wearing headphones could make it harder to hear approaching vehicles, particularly given Indonesia's traffic conditions. While no major incidents have been reported so far, as the event's popularity grows, balancing community coexistence and participant safety may become an increasingly important issue.

Things to Consider

If you plan to join, consider wearing only one earbud so you can still hear surrounding traffic noise, including cars and motorbikes. Even in the early morning, these roads carry traffic, so avoid running at the edge of the road and stay alert to nearby runners and vehicles at all times. Since this is an informal community event without official safety management or insurance, participate with the understanding that it is at your own risk. Out of respect for local residents, it's best to avoid loud shouting or using flares/smoke devices during the run.
