Bali Sees Surge in French Tourists in August 2026, Overtaking India
According to Bali's statistics office (BPS), French tourist arrivals surged 20.42% to 41,937 visits in August 2026, overtaking India to rank third among source countries. The spike is attributed to European summer holidays and extreme heat driving French travelers to Bali, with overall European arrivals also rising.
Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, Head of Bali's statistics office (BPS Bali), announced on Thursday in Denpasar that French tourist arrivals rose 20.42% month-on-month to 41,937 visits in August 2026. The surge shifted the ranking of top visitor countries, with France overtaking India to claim third place.
Agus Gede attributed the spike to European summer holidays combined with extreme heat, which he said drove French citizens to seek relief by vacationing in Bali.
On a monthly basis, Australia remained the top source of visitors with 161,258 arrivals (23.51% of the total), though this represented a 7.61% drop due to the end of school holidays. China ranked second with 47,613 visits, followed by France in third, India in fourth with 34,837 visits, and the United Kingdom in fifth with 32,928 visits. Together, the top five countries accounted for nearly half of all foreign arrivals that month.
By region, Europe recorded the strongest growth at 4.92%, reaching 220,047 visits. In contrast, Oceania fell 8.10% to 179,641 visits, and Asia declined slightly by 0.71% to 141,033 visits. ASEAN arrivals rose 1.25% to 55,939, while the Americas dropped 10.21% to 35,524, and the Middle East saw a sharper decline of 17.87% to 12,531 visits. Africa posted strong growth of 15.74%, reaching 11,286 visits.
Agus Gede noted that the rise in European arrivals offers a positive counterpoint to the government's current focus on attracting short-haul tourists, since European visitors typically stay longer and spend more.
Overall, total foreign arrivals to Bali in August 2026 reached 685,994, down 1.69% from the previous month but up 0.46% year-on-year. Year-to-date arrivals through August 2026 totaled 4,586,959, a decrease of about 1.62% compared to the same period last year. Cumulatively, Australia remains the top source country with 1,138,634 visits, followed by China with 401,762, India (now third) with 352,510, the United Kingdom with 202,759, and South Korea with 191,386.
Things to Consider
With European arrivals, including French tourists, on the rise, popular areas such as Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud as well as restaurants and accommodations may see increased congestion and booking difficulty during peak periods, so travelers should book flights and lodging well in advance. As the European market's presence grows, pricing and service offerings in the tourism sector may also shift, so it's advisable to check with travel agents or accommodations for the latest local updates.
