Bali Governor Pushes Sports Development, Aims for World-Class Achievements
Bali Governor Wayan Koster has declared sports development a key pillar of regional growth, aiming to position Bali as more than just a tourism destination. He expressed dissatisfaction with Bali's current national ranking of fifth and called for stronger, systematic athlete development.
At a meeting of the Bali Sports Association (KONI Bali) held in Denpasar on March 23, 2026, Bali Governor Wayan Koster stated that the region's sports sector has not yet reflected its true potential. He emphasized that sports should be treated as a key pillar of regional development, directly tied to Bali's reputation both nationally and internationally.
Koster urged Bali to move beyond its comfort zone as merely a nature and culture tourism destination, suggesting the island could also become a host for world-class sporting events. While Bali currently ranks fifth nationally, he described this position as unsatisfactory given the region's potential.
He called for focused development in sports that align with local characteristics, particularly martial arts such as pencak silat and karate. Koster noted that many past achievements resulted from natural talent rather than a strong development system, and stressed the need for more structured, long-term planning going forward.
Regarding organizational matters, Koster stated he would not interfere in the selection of KONI Bali's new chairman, cautioning against using his name for internal political purposes. I Nyoman Giri Prasta is the sole candidate in the current selection process.
The meeting marks a starting point for evaluating and reforming Bali's sports sector, part of a broader effort to diversify the island's reputation beyond tourism.
Things to Consider
This is a policy announcement with no immediate impact on foreign tourists or residents. However, as Bali may pursue hosting international sporting events in the future, travelers planning visits should periodically check official announcements from the provincial government or event organizers. Hotel availability and traffic conditions may be affected if large-scale sporting events are eventually held.
