Bali Arts Festival Sees Low Foreign Tourist Turnout, Industry Calls for Stronger Promotion

The 48th edition of Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB), the island's major traditional arts festival, has again seen low turnout among foreign tourists. During this year's event, only 5,743 foreign visitors attendedâroughly 0.8% of all foreign tourists who visited Bali during the same period.
Tourism industry figures say weak promotion is the main reason PKB has yet to become a major draw for international visitors. The festival remains hugely popular among local Balinese, however. On Saturday, July 4, 2026, the Bapang Barong dance competition drew large crowds of residents, with young people especially engaged by the lively, interactive performances representing different regions of Bali.
Despite the festival's cultural depth and authenticity, it remains largely unknown to foreign tourists, limiting its appeal as an international attraction. Industry voices are now calling for greater involvement from hotels, restaurants, and other tourism businesses to help promote PKB more effectively to overseas visitors.
Things to Consider
Visitors staying in Bali during the PKB period (typically held June-July at the Denpasar Art Center) can enjoy authentic Balinese dance and gamelan performances, often for free or at low cost. Ask hotel staff for the current schedule, as it's not always well advertised to tourists. Weekday daytime shows tend to be less crowded than weekend events.
