Badung Regency Plans One-Way System and Underground Road to Tackle Canggu Traffic and Zoning Violations

Badung Regent Wayan Adi Arnawa announced on Wednesday in Canggu, North Kuta, a set of large-scale measures to address the district's growing challenges of traffic congestion and zoning violations as tourism development accelerates.

To ease congestion, the regency plans to implement a one-way traffic system running from east to west in the Canggu area. Budget allocations reaching hundreds of billions of rupiah have already been set aside for road infrastructure improvements. Officials have also been in discussions with international consultants on a long-term plan for an underground road connecting key points to major routes such as Jalan Gatot Subroto in Denpasar.

Beyond traffic, the regent noted that Canggu's rapid growth as a tourist destination makes it vulnerable to zoning violations, such as buildings encroaching on road or river setbacks. He stated the government will take a firm stance against such violations, warning that if left unchecked, tourists would feel less comfortable, leading to fewer visits and a direct hit to regional revenue.

The regent added that alongside physical infrastructure, the government is prioritizing human resource development through education, saying that community welfare and children's educational futures must advance in tandem with tourism growth.
